Pemba eco-Lodge is situated on the remote and beautiful Shamiani Island surrounded by the crystal clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean it is just south of the main island, Pemba, Zanzibar’s sister island.

It is Pemba’s first true eco-lodge offers an authentic holiday experience in a natural environment.

Pemba Lodge is a tropical hideaway in a stunning and unique location.
It is the perfect location to get away from it all and enjoy the untouched nature of this paradise Indian Ocean Island.

With comfortable and well appointed bungalows, Pemba Lodge offers you ultimate privacy and serenity.

These are the only holiday cottages on the whole of Shamiani Island, which is untouched and untainted by mass tourism.

This small island has not changed in centuries and for those interested it is possible to experience how life is from day to day for the few local inhabitants of this rugged little Island.

Pemba eco-Lodge embraces the concept of low impact and sustainability which means that most of what we need is locally sourced.

Our seafood is bought freshly from the village fishermen, our fruit and vegetables are grown organically, and in our team, you will find the natural, easy friendliness and hospitality of the Swahili people.

We take pride in offering you very personal and friendly service in beautiful natural surroundings.

THE BUNGALOWS

With only five cottages at Pemba Lodge, it’s very peaceful and relaxed.

Although the rooms are simple, and not for those who like their creature comforts, they are attractive, a lot of thought has gone into their design.

Five of the rooms are identical – spacious and very simply made from palm and thatch, and retaining an authentic African appearance.

Inside each room you’ll find a four-poster bed all with mosquito netting, a sofa, a huge desk with a chair, and a lovely bookshelf.

All the furniture is made from reclaimed dhow wood so is very solid and chunky.
Woven palm leaves line the walls, and the floors are of dark wood; although this makes the rooms quite dark, even during the day, it also means that they remain relatively cool. Colourful kangas, woven mats and some wall decorations lend character and a touch of individuality. Each room is also equipped with a safe and a full-length mirror.

A wooden door separates the bedroom from the en-suite bathroom, which houses a hot shower, and a composting toilet.

We now have the new larger family bungalow called "Jahazi".

It has three bedrooms and a seating area overlooking the beach on the first floor.

Downstairs, there is a spacious bathroom and two additional rooms, where beds can be fitted for larger families/groups. ‘Jahazi’ also features a lovely veranda with hammocks and easy chairs – perfect for a relaxing holiday with loved ones.
Our green technology:

All bungalows have their private bathroom with state-of-the-art rainwater showers and compost toilets, an environmentally friendly alternative to water-consuming conventional toilets.

The lighting at Pemba Lodge is provided entirely by the sun:

Solar powered lights are discreetly placed, and rechargeable reading lamps are also available.

The bungalows are spread out, with ample space of 35 – 40 m between them; all of them are facing the beach.

A maximum of fourteen guests will be on the island at any time, creating a feeling of solitude and calm in which you will be able to relax completely away from the stress, noise and pressure of everyday life.
The ‘Heart’ of Pemba Lodge

Is the combined restaurant, bar and lounge area which overlooks the tranquil bay on which the lodge is situated.

While away the hours on our comfortable sofas or in a hammock with a book or simply enjoying the vista of countless shades of turquoise, blue and green against the silvery sand.

Our restaurant serves Swahili inspired meals using organic fruit and vegetables as well as freshly caught fish and seafood, all provided by the local farmers and fishermen.

Most excursions involve a walk of varying distance on rough stony ground. Walks can vary from 15 minutes to 1 hour (Village tour). We recommend a tough pair of shoes, trainers and a pair of long pants (trousers). A small torch will also be useful.

It is also recommended that life jackets be worn whenever on a boat or in a kayak.

At Pemba Lodge, the favorite activity is relaxing and doing nothing! However, there are quite a few more for you to enjoy around the lodge and the island; they are designed to get you as close as possible to Shamiani’s natural treasures without disturbing them.

For instance, take one of our kayaks out for a paddle trip around the island and through the mangrove creeks. It’s a fun and low key way to explore your surroundings, as the waters are very calm. A guide will be present to show you the various birds and points of interest.

During low tide, the reef off Shamiani is teeming with life. Our staff will be delighted to accompany you on a reef walk and explain everything you want to know about the marine ecosystem around the island.

There are bush trails criss- crossing the island that will take you up close and personal with the abundant flora and fauna of this undisturbed ecosystem.

Snorkeling equipment is available to use, complimentary, for boat trips to nearby reefs. At the same time you will see the local villagers tending the seaweed farms and the amazing sight of the (low tide) sand bank which resembles a desert scene.

You can also try your hand in both traditional line fishing or deep sea fishing (and have your catch prepared for a delicious barbeque dinner).

Pemba’s spectacular reefs are rated among the world’s top dive sites. Whether you are an experienced scuba diver or just want to try it for the first time, we are happy to make arrangements for you with reputable dive companies on the main island of Pemba. Please let us know in advance if you want to go diving so we can get everything in place for you.

Bird Watching, especially in the mornings – keen ornithologists and amateurs alike will enjoy watching the birdlife around the Lodge and the island. Birds that have been sighted by our guests include black and white hornbill, paradise fly catcher, rollers, kwarara, red-eyed pigeon, pied kingfisher, sunbird, mnana, common tern, little tern…

Sunrise and Sunset Watching – Spectacular sunrises can be seen from the beach in front of the Lodge, but late risers do not need to miss out! A short walk from Pemba Lodge is Kichanga Kasa beach; the perfect spot to sit and watch the sun set at the end of another lazy day in this tropical paradise. Sunset is best experienced from Turtle bay with a visit to the rescue turtle pond nearby.

Stargazing in the night sky. Our location away from the pollution and lights of the big cities makes the sky at night magically come alive with stars and planets not normally viewed. What better place to stargaze and look at the constellations? Maybe see if you can locate the Southern Cross.

And last but not least, treat yourself to a Swahili massage with natural oils, get a henna tattoo or have your hair braided African style; it all can be arranged with the ladies from the village.

Sail to Shamiani Island from our sister hotel Mnarani Beach Cottages in Nungwi, on the northern tip of Zanzibar. We will in a 30 ft Tiki catamaran or on a traditional Dhow with two outboard engines. You also have the option to experience the challenge of game fishing in the famous Pemba Channel on route.

* Offer applicable to the rate of 165 US$ per person per night. Promotional offer rate, excluding transfers, laundry, excursions and alcoholic beverages.

How to get to us:

There are daily flights to Pemba from Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar or Dar Es Salaam, and a ferry service from Zanzibar or Tanga.
A scenic drive through Pemba’s lush countryside will take you to the boat launch for Shamiani Island; it’s about 45 minutes from the airport and 30 minutes from the harbor in Mkoani.
There, a traditional boat awaits you to bring you to Pemba Lodge, a trip of 15 – 30 minutes, depending on the tides.
